You know those moments when you are so excited about something and you talk about it and think it up big in your mind and then it doesn't happen, or it happens, but not in the way you planned!
For instance when you cant wait to eat green beans but your garden did not produce those so you open a can and the first bite you take is the hard stem.
Or when you go on a trip and the kids cannot wait because you have told them they get to stay in a hotel and swim. They talked about swimming the entire day! My husband is amazing at finding great deals so we pull up to our find, and the pool is not working tonight, but it is promised to be open at 6 am, so we stayed. The same man who told about the pool also told us breakfast was until 10 am. So we took our time got to breakfast at 9:15 and what do ya know, breakfast was only until 9. We decide to head to the pool and what do ya know! The pool is still not open. Also to add one more piece of information, we were up all night listening to what sounded like guns or fireworks. We called the front desk man to the room and the sound stopped, of course! 10 minutes after he left the blasting sound started again. So needless to say we were all tired and majorly disappointed.
This was not going to ruin our trip, but explaining to 3 kids who were looking forward to biscuits and gravy and a pool was not an easy thing to do.
Being disappointed is never an easy thing to deal with, even as an adult it can be difficult. I told my 3 sour faced kiddos that I do understand the feeling they are going through, but we cannot let this ruin our trip. There are still a lot of great things we get to discover and we will laugh about this very soon. Disappointment is something we all have to learn how to deal with so the feeling doesn't fester and lead us to bad thoughts in our heads.
Over and over again we read of discouraged and disappointed people in the Bible. Moses, Esther, David, etc. The list goes on, but a verse that I read that helped me is found in a very short book that I don't just think of turning to, thank goodness for cell phones! When you are in the car and need a quick look up you can get to the word easily with a phone, but when I got home I grabbed my Bible and read the book of Habakkuk.
It starts out with Habakkuk saying, "How long, O Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen, or cry out to you, 'Violence!' but you do not save." Habakkuk was discouraged, disappointed in the Lord, but after conversation with the God he ended in saying, "Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.
In the midst of disappointment it is so easy to think about ourselves and what we are dealing with at the time, but if we take our eyes off of ourselves and think about God's promises, and even other people that are going through hard times, it helps bring us out of the "woes me mentality!"
We ended up having a blast on our 2 day adventure! Here are some pics!

So I guess the question is, Do I want to take away disappointment from my kiddos?
No, if they do not learn how to deal with disappointment while living at home they will not know how to function in life when they are adults. Life is full of let down, but how we deal with it is very important to our relationship with Christ.
